Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah is the current Director-General of Health Malaysia since 1st March 2013. He is also a Senior Consultant in Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Hospital Putrajaya. Prior to this, he has also held the post of Deputy Director-General of Health (Medical Programme) between January 2008 until end of February 2013.
He obtained both his Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree in 1988 and his Master of Surgery (M.S.) in 1994 from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Four years later in between 1997-1998, he completed his Fellowship training in Breast & Endocrine Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His medical career upon graduation from medical school began in 1988 to 1989 in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) as a Houseman and Medical Officer.
After completing his Master of Surgery in 1994, he then served as a General Surgeon in Hospital Kuala Terengganu (1994-1996). Following his fellowship training, he then headed the Breast and Endocrine Surgical Unit in HKL (1998-2002), before becoming the Head of Breast, Endocrine and General Surgical Department, Hospital Putrajaya (2002-2008). He received his Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia in 2004 and an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians London in 2012. He has also been conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Medicine from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (2014), Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia (2015) and Honorary Fellowship of the International College of Dentists (2016).
He is a life member and the past elected 11th Congress President (2008) of the Asian Association of Endocrine Surgeons, faculty member and Malaysian representative for the International Society of Surgeons, International Association of Endocrine Surgeons and Breast Surgery International. His international engagements include being a member of the Board of Directors, Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), Geneva; as Malaysian Delegation Member and Alternate Delegation Head for WHO World Health Assembly, WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Regional Meetings and other related WHO Meetings, and as the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Representative for the Working Group on Strategic Budget Space Allocation, WHO.
He has presented many papers in local and international conferences and has had numerous invitations to speak at local and international events. Apart from that, he is also a prolific writer with extensive publications in local and international journals and has authored many chapters in various textbooks on endocrine surgery. In this keynote lecture, Datuk Noor Hisham will be addressing a few key issues that we are all unsettled of, including the issue of housemanship application process and posts availability, and postgraduate training opportunities including the parallel specialisation pathways.
